A security weakness in the processors at the heart of modern computers (#Intel, #ARM and #AMD), affecting both PC and Apple Macs, first identified back in June 2017 is still far from being resolved in many cases. Software patches rolled out from January, actually caused more damage than the potential risks. Some systems showed signs of instability and delays during startup and some #Windows systems with AMD processors ceased to start at all (#bricked).
Several PC manufacturers have instructed customers not to apply OS patches until further notice.
Although work continues to fix the problem (mostly on PCs) manufacturers of mobile devices have admitted it may never be fixed and Google's patches for Android phones may or may not be adopted by handset manufacturers. ... See MoreSee Less

If you have a problem opening Websites in #Firefox running under #Windows10, your PC has #Kaspersky AV or Kaspersky Internet Security installed and you get a "Your #connection is #not #secure" error message (see attached screen dump) then this will probably fix the problem...
1. Start Firefox and in a new tab, type or paste "about:config" (without quotes) in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button "I accept the risk".
2. In the search box above the list, type or paste "roots" (without quotes) and pause while the list is filtered
3. Double-click the "security.enterprise_roots.enabled" preference to switch the value from false to true.
If you are not comfortable doing this fix for yourself please contact me and I'll be happy to help.

Yesterday, while working on a client's PC, I found out that the ISP TalkTalk regularly block access to legitimate Websites and to remove the block you have to contact their support every single time it happens. This is particularly annoying given the difficulty of actually getting to speak to a TalkTalk agent as their automated phone system is practically impenetrable. Lucky, there's a reasonably straight forward work-around, you just need to change the DNS server settings in the TalkTalk router. It's not for the amateur to try because you can break your Internet connection but that's what GP Computer Support Scotland is here for. 😃 ... See MoreSee Less

Everybody has a family member with a computer like this...
Hacking attempts on my website have dramatically increased recently and I've had to increase site security. The last attack on my site came from Florida USA.
I predict that, pretty soon, unless world governments crack down heavily on hackers, the #Internet will become unusable for individuals to publish on. Only large corporations and governments will have the resources to resist the #CyberVandalism hackers carry out. ... See MoreSee Less
#New #User #Accounts #Windows10 #Bug
It's come to my attention that a large number of Windows 10 users who upgraded from previous versions of Windows cannot now create new, working local users on their PC since the upgrade. The problem is that the newly created user profiles immediately logout when you try to use them. There is also a bug that causes the built-in guest account to malfunction making it impossible to use. Signing in using the #Guest account results in a blank screen and the #error message "Shell infrastructure host has stopped working"
Obviously most people won't notice this is a problem until they need to add a new user to their PC, this is how I found the problem when a friend wanted to use my laptop to create a PowerPoint presentation for a job interview.
The good news is that I fixed both problems on my PC and I can do the same for you. The first issue is relatively straight forward to fix by replacing the damaged files. Getting undamaged versions of those files was the hard bit, it took me two hours to extract those files from a Windows 10 installation disk (they were compressed and encrypted). The 'Guest' account issue could only be solved by upgrading to Windows 10 #Professional because only the pro version has the tools needed to create an alternative Guest account.

I had a phone call this morning from someone looking to connect an old monitor with a #VGA cable to a new #PC with an #HDMI output.
This isn't possible with a simple cable because, as some of you may know, HDMI is a digital signal and VGA is an analogue signal also, the HDMI output has built in digital rights management to prevent copying of copyrighted material (DVDs, Blu Rays and streamed movies).
There are converters that can do the job with varying degrees of success however, image quality will undoubtedly be inferior to a new digital monitor and some require an additional power connection, usually taken from one of the PC's USB ports or a dedicated mains adapter.
If your desktop PC has an HDMI output then it most likely has a DVI output too. A simple DVI to VGA connector is a much better solution (and cheaper) for connecting an old VGA monitor because, unlike HDMI, a standard DVI connector has analogue RGB output built in so no signal conversion is required (only the physical shape of the connection is changed). ... For those of you who have PCs running #Windows10 you may encounter a problem if you try to install #iTunes. If you get a message saying "This app can't run on your PC" it's because the iTunes installation file hasn't fully downloaded although it appears that it has.
The current 64 Bit version of iTunes installation file (iTunes6464Setup.exe) size should be 170,689KB.
It would appear that the problem occurs most often when downloading the file via Google Chrome web browser, if you're having this issue try using the Microsoft Edge browser. ... See MoreSee Less
